Teacher: (to a new boy)What’s your name, my little fellow? New boy: Erbert Arris. Teacher: Always say “sir” please, when you are speaking to master. It’s more polite. New boy: (apologetically) Sir Erbert Arris.
Do you know what’s gonging on? The teacher asked the new boy to call him sir. But that boy misunderstood him that the teacher asked him to add sir when he said his name.So he answered the teacher that he called Sir Erbert Arris.
In Chinese language, we can call the male teachers 先生(xiān shēng) which means sir. And when you answer the teacher’s question, firstly you should say 先生(xiān shēng). That shows your respect to the teachers. But 先生(xiān shēng) also can means gentlemen. So the boy misunderstood the teacher.
