这时候沙僧拿出一支枪，说：我听说这玩艺儿立马可以送您上西天！

Journey to the West is one of the four masterpieces of China and four person appeared in the joke are the four most important characters in the book. In the storyline, the four monks are going to get the scripture from the Western Heaven, and the destination is far far away. So in the joke, the master asked his disciples to figure out a fastest way to go there.
I think when you heard the word, gun, you became confused, how could a gun play a role of vehicle? And apparantly, Sha Seng doesn’t know about guns very well.
Well, “ go to western heaven” 上西天 can also mean “die” in Chinese, for example, “if you make the same mistake twice, I will sent you to the Western Heaven” means “if you make the same mistake twice, I will kill you”
So it is clear that the slow-witted Sha Seng misundertood the function of guns.
Remember 上西天 is not an official word to express death, so in a solemn situation, you can’t use the word.
