Dealing with Prep. 把
The usage of把(bǎ) 把(bǎ) structure in Chinese is also called “the disposal construction” that refers to a verb dealing with both an object and a complement. 把(bǎ) can be used as a preposition to move the object up before the verb, and leave the complement after the verb.
Sentence pattern: Subj. + 把(bǎ) + Obj. + V + complement or other elements.
There are several constraints on the把(bǎ) construction. 1, The object that is proposed with把(bǎ) always has to be a define object. 2, The verb has to imply a kind of disposal nature. 3, The verb is always followed by a kind of complement, such as an aspect marker, various complements or verbal constructions. 4, The把(bǎ) construction is frequently used with many verbs in Chinese except those verbs with sensory, emotional or existential meanings.
Examples: 1, Please show me your ID. 请(qǐng) 把(bǎ) 您(nín) 的(dí) 证(zhèng) 件(jiàn) 给(gěi) 我(wǒ) 看(kàn) 一(yī) 下(xià) 。
2, I have changed the traveler’s check for Hong Kong dollars. 我(wǒ) 把(bǎ) 旅(lǚ) 行(xíng) 支(zhī) 票(piào) 兑(duì) 换(huàn) 成(chéng) 了(le) 港(gǎng) 币(bì) 。
3, I regard her as my best friend. 我(wǒ) 把(bǎ) 她(tā) 当(dàng) 成(chéng) 我(wǒ) 最(zuì) 好(hǎo) 的(de) 朋(péng) 友(yǒu) 。
4, The waiter give the key to the room to the guest. 服(fú) 务(wù) 员(yuán) 把(bǎ) 房(fáng) 间(jiān) 的(de) 钥(yào) 匙(shi) 给(gěi) 了(le) 客(kè) 人(rén) 。
5, I pass my luggage to the inspectors. 我(wǒ) 把(bǎ) 行(xíng) 李(lǐ) 递(dì) 给(gěi) 了(le) 检(jiǎn) 查(chá) 人(rén) 员(yuán) 。
