This is a folk song of Mongolia. It was very popular in the fifties and sixties. The song describes the love between young men and women through the young men and women’s dialogues of the heart before they meet with each other at night. Do you know these proper nouns? “敖包”is a Mongolian transliteration, meaning heaps, specifically, mound hillocks created by human power. “敖包”can also mean a road sign or boundary. It is also a place for Mongolian herdsmen to offer sacrifices. Usually,“敖包”was regarded as a meeting place between young men and women. “海棠”——The Chinese begonia is one of the most famous ornamental flowery plants in China. Not only is its design and color gorgeous but also its fruit is dainty. There are generally two varieties of begonia: red begonia and white begonia.

The round and bright moon usually sets Chinee people missing their families and lovers. 2. 哟嗬(yō hē) “哟嗬”are words inserted into lines of this song for balance or euphony. The words add no meaning, but it causes the song to be more vivid and vigorous in rhythm. 3. 心上的人 “心上的人”indicates the person of one’s heart (i.e. lover).

1. “如果”,used to indicate assumption, is usually used at the beginning of the first clause; the second clause deduces conclusions or proposes questions. The words“就、那、那么”are often used in the second clause and complement“如果”. For example: If you hate me, please leave me! 如果你讨厌我,就请离开我! If it rains, we'll have the barbecue indoors. 如果下雨,我们就在室内烧烤。
2. The pattern“只要”is used in a conditional sentence and often used with“就”,which indicates certain required conditions. such as: I shall love you as long as I have breath. 只要我还有一丝呼吸,我就会一直爱着你。 As long as you study hard, you will learn chinese well. 只要你努力学习,你就会学好汉语。
