婚礼上，一个外国人称赞新娘非常美丽，一旁的新郎笑答：“哪里哪里。”外国人以为新郎是想知道他指新娘哪里漂亮就继续回答：“头发、眉毛、眼睛、耳朵、鼻子、嘴都漂亮！”
结果引起全场哄堂大笑。
At a wedding, a foreigner praised the bride for her beauty, the groom standing beside smiled:“where, where”(translated literally), the foriegner thought the groom wanted details, so he continued:“hair, eyebrows, ears, nose, mouth, they are all very pretty”
Then all guests laughed.
Have you ever made such mistake? I have noted in the joke above that “where where” was translated literally, so 哪里 in this joke doesn’t mean where (although the two words 哪里 do have a meaning of where), it is actually a phrase to express the couple’s self-abasement, a little like saying I’m flatterd or I’m not as perfect as you praised.
So next time, when you hear someone says 哪里, you should observe the one’s expression carefully in order to make sure whether he wants your detailed explanation or he just wants to show his thanks in a modest way.
