进行

The verb “进行” indicates a continuous action with the meaning of “ to carry out ; to conduct “. The continuous action is often indicated by the verb following “ 进行”, or by the subject of the sentences. This construction denotes formal and serious activities, for example,

大家还在进行对话。
他们开始进行调查了。
这项工作已经进行了三个月了。
毕业考试正在进行。

Note:

(1) The verb placed after “ 进行” cannot be a monosyllabic one. One cannot say “ 进行看” , “ 进行谈”.
(2) The verb placed after “ 进行” cannot receive an object. The object is usually introduced by “ 对”. For example, one cannot say: “ 大家进行讨论训练的时间” “ 他们开始进行调查这个问题”。The correct expression is : “ 大家对训练的时间进行讨论。” “ 他们开始对这个问题进行调查。”
