“不但…而且..“ the construction “不但…而且..”

“不但…而且..”generally occurs in complex progressive sentences. If the two clauses share the same subject(usually appearing in the first clause), “不但”is usually placed after the subject. If each clause has its own subject,“不但”and “而且”are normally placed before their respective subjects.

For example:
张教授不但是我的汉语老师，而且也是我的中国朋友。
我们不但盖了一座小楼，而且还买了一辆汽车。
不但他不认识我了，而且我也可能不认识他了。
不但中国人喜欢《红楼梦》，而且外国人也很喜欢这部小说，

In the second clause, “而且”is often used together with the adverb “也”or “还”
