恐怕, an adverb, is usually used in a negative prediction, and it carries the mild sense of “afraid” . therefore, 恐怕is different from 怕(fear), which is a verb. The subject of 恐怕is always understand as “I”, no matter “I” appears or not in a sentence.
Example: 1. 天这么黑,恐怕要下雨来。 The sky is getting darker; I am afraid it’s going to rain. 2. 已经很晚来,恐怕他不会来了。 It’s already very late, I am afraid that he will not come.
