The Long March The Long March cannot frighten the Red Army , Turning a thousand mountains, a thousand rivers , to nothing . Down below the Five Bridges unwind like gentle , The great Wumeng Mountain roll by like clay balls . Washed by the waters of the Golden Sand , cloud-wrapped cliffs are warm , Iron chains over the Dadu River are cold . Snow-capped Minshan Mountain run for a thousand mile. And we cross them, singing, The whole Red Army marching, every man happy.

There was not one Long March, but several, as various Communist armies in the south escaped to the north and west. The most well known is the march from Jiangxi province which began in October 1934. The First Front Army of the Chinese Soviet Republic, led by an inexperienced military commission, was on the brink of complete annihilation by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's troops in their stronghold in Jiangxi province. The Communists escaped in a circling retreat to the west and north under the eventual command of Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai,. The Long March reportedly traversed some 12,500 kilometers (8,000 miles) over 370 days.
