Zhengzhou
Situated in the Central Plains, Zhengzhou rests on Mount Songshan in the west, borders on the Yellow River in the north, and connects the Huang Huai Plains in the east and south. It is one of the oldest central cities in China, a hub of communications directly accessing 10 provinces, and a strategic place throughout the various dynasties. In modern history Zhengzhou was the source of the great February 7 Strike launched by the railway workers along the Beijing-Hankou line ,adding a glorious chapter to the history that could move people to song and tears. Today's Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province, has jurisdiction over 6 districts, 5 county-level cities and 1 county, covers a total area of 7446.2 square kilometers and presently owns a total population of 6.977 million. The city proper of Zhengzhou has an area of 1062 square kilometers (of which, 137 square kilometers belongs to the developed urban area), a population of 3.22 million, and two national development zones.
Zhengzhou has also taken great pride in being a major central city along the Long Hai and Jing Guang railways, a key national hub of communications, a famous commercial city, a National Famous Historical and Cultural City, a Top Tourist City of China, a National Model City for Cleanliness and Tidiness, a National Model City for Supporting Military Work, a Model City in the Campaign of Building National Civilized Cities, and some other honorary titles. Ruins of A Shang Dynasty Capital The long history leaves Zhengzhou abundant cultural heritages. Within the municipal area, there are more than 1400 cultural relics, 26 of which are key sights under the state protection. Mount Songshan Scenic Area is one of China's 44 key scenic areas as well as a National Pilot Civilized Scenic Tourist Attraction. The Shaolin Temple known as the "No. 1 Famous Temple under Heaven" is located in the embrace of Mount Songshan, the Shaolin Kung Fu that has gained a worldwide fame just originated here. In the Songshan area, there are also Lord Zhou's Sun Shade-measuring Platform of the Zhou Dynasty and the Observatory of the Yuan Dynasty - the oldest astronomical structures in China, Songyang Academy - one of the four major academies in the Song Dynasty, Zhongyue Temple - the largest existing block of Taoist buildings in China, etc. Around Zhengzhou city proper, numerous ruins of ancient towns, cultures, tombs, buildings, passes and battlefields have been found; and the ancestor of the Chinese nation- the Yellow Emperor and many famous historical figures including Liezi, Zichan, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Gao Gong were born in Zhengzhou.
Situated in the center of China's greatest cross of communications, Zhengzhou has convenient communications and developed telecommunications. The artery railways of Long Hai and Jing Guang cross in the downtown, the National Highways No. 107 and No. 310 and the freeways of Jing Zhu and Lian Huo go through the city proper, the Xinzheng International Airport that has been honored as a National Civilized Airport has routes leading to more than 30 cities both at home and abroad. Zhengzhou possesses the largest train marshalling yard in Asia, the biggest transit station for small loads of goods in China, one Grade I airport, one Grade I railway port and one Grade II highway port, all the customs formalities for exported goods can be completed in Zhengzhou and directly transported abroad. Besides, the business volume of both postal and telecommunications services rank first across the country. Zhengzhou has become one of China's leading comprehensive junctures of communications and telecommunications covering the areas of railway, highway, aviation, post and communication.
As one of the central experimental cities for commercial and trade reforms listed by the State Council, Zhengzhou has earned a nationwide reputation for its developed commerce and trade. It possesses a large number of high-grade and multi-functional large commercial and trading facilities and distribution markets attracting businesses from the various parts of the country, 30 of them have annual business volume of above 100 million yuan; each year more than a hundred international, national, regional and specialized fairs, talks and other major business events are held in this city; and over 10,000 domestic and overseas business organizations have established offices or operating facilities here.
