Besides describing or commenting on a movement or an action itself, a complement of state also describes the state of the subject (a person or thing) that has appeard or developed because of the movement or action. For example: 他们玩儿得很高兴。 水果洗得干干净净的。
Adjectival phrases can often act as the complement of state, while verbal phrases, subject—predicate phrases and other complements can also serve as the complement of state. For example: 那儿安静得没有一点儿声音。(verbal phrase) 他们下棋下得忘了吃饭。 他们忙得没有时间唱京剧。 他们扭得全身出汗。(subject-predicate phrase) 他高兴得跳起来。(directional complement) 我累得躺在床上。(resultative complement)
